Poulenc & St Saëns Organ Concertoes
Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
conducted by Arvo Volmer, soloist Thomas Trotter, tympani soloist Vadim Simongauz
Presented live as “The Organ Symphony” in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s APN News & Media Premier Series 2010
In 2010 the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra celebrated 30 years playing for Auckland. This first APO Live CD marks this momentous anniversary as well as the inauguration of the Auckland Town Hall organ and the first chance to hear this grand instrument in its refurbished configuration.
The revivification of the Auckland Town Hall organ has certainly captured the imagination of the city, so much so that Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra's Thursday concert drew a capacity audience and was repeated two nights later.
William Dart, Review for New Zealand Herald Mar 29, 2010
"Whether one likes Poulenc's music or not it’s impossible not to be drawn into this electrifying performance and marvel at the sheer professionalism of everyone involved. When it comes to the Saint-Saёns organ symphony the APO naturally steals the show - with an even bigger canvas to work with they shape some beautiful melodic phrases integrating perfectly with the organ. This disc illustrates what a splendid organ the Auckland Town Hall now possesses and highlights what a first-rate orchestra the Auckland Philharmonia is. Needlesss to say, Thomas Trotter proves to be a magnificent soloist and Arvo Volmer an inspiring conductor, making the all round combined effort a huge success."
