Piano
Masterworks from America & New Zealand
Thomas Hecht
This CD shows Hecht at his powerful and poetic best in three
great mid-20th century works for solo piano. The 2 major American
piano sonatas, by Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland, sandwich
a rarely heard New Zealand gem, Douglas Lilburn’s “Chaconne”
of 1946, considered by Hecht an ignored masterpiece, and available
here on CD for the first time.
Hecht, for several years head of piano studies at Victoria
University of Wellington, now heads the piano department at
Peabody Conservatorium’s new Singapore Music School.
